Cinematic Previs for Vecna: Eve of Ruin

This promotional spot for Dungeons & Dragons: Vecna – Eve of Ruin brought a unique challenge: how do you create cinematic energy when your main subject is completely frozen in time? As a huge fan of Stranger Things, I was thrilled to take on this creative puzzle!

As the Previs Artist, I helped plan and refine the visual storytelling before final production. With a character locked in a moment of time, we used camera movement and atmospheric effects to create energy. Every shot was carefully crafted with dynamic camera motion—only coming to rest towards the end of the spot. To further enhance the scene, we introduced blood mist from the spell book at the center of Vecna’s chest, which became a unifying visual element throughout the sequence.

I’m grateful to Brazen Animation for bringing me onto this project and allowing me to use Unreal Engine for Previs. While their pipeline was primarily Maya-based at the time, this project showcased how Unreal Engine’s real-time Previs capabilities can enhance efficiency and creativity in animation production.
