Previs Challenges in The Book of Life: Bringing Action to Animation
Working on The Book of Life at Reel FX was an exciting adventure, filled with unique Previs challenges that pushed creativity and technical expertise. One of the most surprising—and entertaining—hurdles came during the battle with the film’s main villain, Chakal.
Uncovering Chakal’s Hidden Superpower
While initially blocking out the battle sequence, I came across an animation test that completely changed my approach. In the test, Chakal’s arms extended like Inspector Gadget’s, a detail I had no idea existed! This discovery reshaped the entire fight choreography, forcing me to rethink camera angles, action pacing, and shot composition.
I remember telling my supervisor, Joe Johnston:
“I didn’t know Chakal had Go-Go-Gadget Arms!!”

This unexpected twist made for a much more dynamic and engaging battle, adding an extra layer of surprise to the villain’s character.
Dancing into Battle: A Unique Fight Style
Another creative challenge was integrating dance-inspired combat into the action. Director Jorge Gutiérrez wanted the protagonists, Maria and Monolo, to effortlessly defeat Chakal while making it feel like a beautifully choreographed dance sequence. The result? A playful yet intense fight scene that perfectly matched the film’s vibrant tone.
