Previs in Action: Monsters vs. Aliens – Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space
Working on Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space was an exciting challenge in Previs. This project gave me the unique opportunity to choreograph a fight sequence between two characters, something I had never done before.
At the time, I was training in MMA at 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu in Burbank, CA, and it was fascinating to apply real-world combat techniques to Susan’s movements in the scene. The combination of Previs and martial arts allowed me to create believable, dynamic action sequences that helped shape the final shots.
Solving the Pumpkin Monster Puzzle
One of the trickiest parts of the project was figuring out how the smaller pumpkins would combine to form the larger monster. Initially, this seemed like a daunting task, but thanks to my colleague James Keefer’s brilliant advice, I was able to work backward—animating the completed monster first, then breaking it apart into individual pumpkin pieces. This simple yet effective technique created the illusion of the pumpkins assembling in a seamless and visually compelling way. Sometimes, the best solutions are right in front of us!
